A Brief History

Cheveley Park Stud, situated two miles to the east of Newmarket, is probably the oldest and most picturesque stud in England, and racehorses have been bred here for over a thousand years. Records show that several reigning monarchs have owned parts of Cheveley at one time or another, including King Athelstan, King Canute, Edward the Confessor, William the Conqueror, Edward I and Edward II. Even today, there are some buildings that date back to the sixteenth century.

The mansion built by Colonel McCalmont served as a hospital during World War I.

In the first decade of the nineteenth century the Duke of Rutland came to Cheveley Park Stud, and he bred the winners of four classics: SORCERY, winner of the 1811 Oaks Stakes; her son, CADLAND, winner of the 2000 guineas and Derby in 1828, and RHODA, who took the 1000 Guineas in 1816.

The present beauty of Cheveley Park is due primarily to the Duke and Duchess of Rutland; indeed the Duchess is commemorated by 'Duchess Drive', the tree-lined avenue that links the stud to Newmarket. The magnificent double avenue of limes on the stud, which runs parallel with Duchess Drive, is a reminder of the grand mansion built by Colonel McCalmont in 1892, in which he used to entertain his good friend, the Prince of Wales. It should be said that the latter enjoyed the races run on the stud for his benefit - particularly as his horses always won!

The famous stallion, ISINGLASS was bred at Cheveley Park, and an elaborate box was built for him when he returned to take up stud duties in 1896. He had eleven victories from twelve starts on the racecourse, which included the Triple Crown, the Ascot Gold Cup and the Eclipse Stakes, amassing £57,455 in prize money, a figure which was only bettered 59 years later by TULYAR in 1952.

The old drive to Cheveley Park, which hasn't altered much over the years.

Today, the stallion yard, which consists of eight stallion boxes, still includes the famous Isinglass box.

The stud had a number of owners after the death of Colonel McCalmont in 1902, including the well-known trainer Bob Sherwood, Albert Stafford Smith and his son Richard.

David and Patricia Thompson purchased Cheveley Park Stud in 1975 and have expanded the operation to include Ashley Heath Stud, Sandwich Stud, the former Strawberry Hill Stud and Warren Hill Stud. The stallion roster has continued to improve and develop over the last thirty years and in 2010, there will be five stallions in residence. These represent a truly international stallion base for British breeders.

The Cheveley Park team would like to express their gratitude to all the breeders who have been so supportive over the years. We look forward to serving the British breeding industry for many years to come.
